Power-endurance Class with Rob Miller


Longtime Yosemite pioneer, Rob Miller, veteran climber and professional coach is back for the 2016 -2017 training season with a Power-Endurance Class!

The Power-Endurance phase of training follows the longer-term cycles of Strength and Power to prepare the climber for the performance season.

Whether that performance goal is to climb harder routes, water solo or send big roofs in the Arizona back country, the Power-Endurance Cycle completes any long term training program with the relatively short term adaptation of fighting the pump with “more fitness”.

Power-Endurance is based on the body’s ability to turn readily available glucose into a quick supply of available ATP (andenosine triphosphate) during sustained efforts that are close to the climbers max ability… with an added “pump” factor. Because lactic acid is one of the chemical by-products of this complex energy system, lactic threshold is another name for the same ability to fight the pump and recover on marginal holds.

This metabolic adaptation of turning glucose into fuel requires a high level of motivation and a willingness to push into your personal tolerance for discomfort. Intervals with periods of work followed by periods of rest is how its done. It doesn’t take long but it does require a lot of effort.

You will be able to hold onto holds longer and recover where you thought impossible at the start of the class. You will also be able to hold difficult body positions during sustained efforts and tap into the mental toughness that is the difference between sending and failing. All you have to do is show up for each of the six scheduled classes beginning Tuesday, March 21. You will not have to do anything you are not comfortable doing but please be prepared for a high level of activity. What you put into the class will have everything to do with what you get out of it, especially your willingness to encourage and support others also pushing their physical limits.

Class Schedule

March 21 through April 6, Tues and Thurs from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

To maintain a high level of personal instruction, space will be limited to 12 participants per cycle.
